Home teeth whitening products are convenient, easy to use, reasonably priced and easily available. Peroxide is the key ingredient in most whiteners. Who are not suitable for Home Teeth Whitening?
- People whose teeth are painfully sensitive to cold
- Anyone with crowns or fillings on their front teeth
- People whose enamel seems more gray than yellow due to intrinsic stains
- Bleaching won’t help when discoloration lies inside the teeth such as dental fluorosis, stains from tetracycline in childhood.
- Not recommended under the age of 16 because the pulp chamber, or nerve of the tooth is enlarged until this age
- Not suitable for pregnant and lactating women
- People with sensitive teeth, allergies and gum diseases
- Teeth whitening will not work on any types of false teeth such as dentures, crowns, veneers
Whitening Strips:-
Whitening strips are small piece of polyethylene, a flexible plastic that molds to the top surfaces. Each strip is coated with gel made from hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide that reacts moisture in the mouth and breakdown the stains. If strips are applied incorrectly or pushed into the gums, extreme sensitivity and soreness may result. Using the strips too often and for too long also can damage tooth enamel and lead to underlying tissue damage below the gums. Due to excessive use tooth can become porous and enamel can breakdown
Teeth Whitening Trays:-
Teeth whitening trays are made of a flexible material that will adhere to your teeth. The material fits around your teeth gently and allows for whitening on the surface and in between your teeth. Trays sold in home whitening kits aren’t custom made, so they are more likely to rub and irritate your gums. Dental professionals can also dispense custom made molds that have been created just for you and therefore fit in your mouth and directly over your teeth perfectly. Some teeth whitening trays are prefilled with a peroxide based whitening agent, while others come with syringes of whitening gel that can be dispensed as needed by the user. Teeth whitening trays usually require a larger daily application time than many other teeth whitening options
Whitening Gels
Clear peroxide based gels applied with a small brush directly to the surface of your teeth. Follow the instructions and directions on the product carefully. Initial results are seen in a few days and final results are sustained for about 4 months. Some gels are worn overnight or for deveral hours at a time for the best results
Rinses:-
Rinses will give fresh breath and helps to decrease plaque and gum diseases. Hydrogen peroxide containing rinses will give whiter teeth. Rinses will take 12 weeks’ time to see result. Swish them around in your mouth for 60 seconds twice a day before brushing your teeth. These are not effective as other because short contact time with the teeth
Whitening Toothpaste:-
So many whitening toothpastes are available in the market. Whitening toothpaste can whiten teeth slightly by removing surface stains. Whitening toothpaste can also be used after bleaching treatment to help maintain results. When used twice a day, whitening toothpaste can take 2 to 6 weeks to make teeth appear whiter.
